“LET’S GET HEALTHY, BOSTON! CELEBRATION”: The Boston Public Health Commission and Boston Alliance for Community Health’s Public Health Initiative Sees Success at Launch Event

Roxbury, MA — September 21, 2015: This past Saturday, 291 residents from throughout Boston gathered at the Roxbury YMCA to celebrate the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) and Boston Alliance for Community Health (BACH)’s joint initiative, Let’s Get Healthy, Boston! (LGHB). The event focused on LGHB’s three objectives: Active Transportation, Healthy Food and Beverage Promotion, and Smoke-Free Housing.

Volunteers from LGHB, BPHC, BACH and other public health organizations helped run attractions. These included a “Veggie Twister” game, free helmet giveaways and healthy beverage and smoke free housing demos.

Fresh Truck delivered healthy vegetables and Fresh Food Generations provided lunch. Volunteers from Boston Cyclists Union repaired bikes. The event was family-friendly with Bowdoin Bike School running bike-based games for children. In total, volunteers gave away 69 helmets and repaired 6 bikes.

The event was attended by such notable Bostonians as Congressman Michael Capuano, City Councilor Tito Jackson, and Chief of Health and Human Services, Felix Arroyo.

LGHB is a $5.4 million, 3-year grant funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Its aim is to reduce chronic disease. It does so by making healthy choices easier through policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) changes in Boston neighborhoods and establishments.

According to BPHC, LGHB also “supports 75 Healthy Community Champions (HCC). These Boston residents work within their communities at a grassroots level to encourage healthy living practices throughout their neighborhoods and play an important role in BPHC’s outreach strategy.”

LGHB directly aligns with BACH’s Strategic Issue 4: Improving health by focusing on transportation policies; Strategic Issue 1: Achieving racial and ethnic health equity; and through the HCC program, Issue 5: Increasing the number of immigrants, people of color, and other underrepresented populations in leadership roles and decision-making processes.
